We have several challenging projects in different organizations around Cape Town within the field of social work, education and mental health (psychology). Other fields available on request!
1.The J’s children’s house
Is an old established project looking for candidates who studied social work to assist them with their programs in Cape Town, South Africa. It involves working with children at schools, the community, and also working with their families. This project is under the auspices of an established, well-run program.Children either come from a poor fisherman community or a large township. As intern you will assist the team in schools, after school programs, therapy, interventions, and family workshops. The aim is to build stronger communities with happier children. As you will be working with children/families that comes from a deprived background, you will have regular debriefing sessions/school sessions and personal conversations with the team to help you understand the background of the children you will be working with. Due to the nature of the work, it’s always best for you to work in a team of two. You might not work directly with each other, but it will help you to adapt while working with children from these deprived communities.
Specific activities you may get involved in:
2.The A Foundation
This is a well-established and well-known charitable organization. They offer a very wide range of services to youth of the area. It includes job /skills training, social services, environmental projects, after school programs, sport, music, life skills, arts & culture and more. You will be slotted in one of these programs – also based on your interests and skills - working to provide underprivileged learners in the Cape Town area with enrichment opportunities. With up to 1000 young people participating in our programmes daily, the Foundation empowers both the participants at the schools as well as the surrounding communities. The Foundation usually host many volunteers. We have worked with them for over 18 years already.
3. Parent Organization & USPO
There are two similar organizations in and around the Cape Town area – both working with “stronger families”,teenage pregnancy, family related issues. We have had successful internships with both in psychology and social work. You must be able to use initiative, work in a team and be willing to learn from their team who are already very experienced. Work would include social interventions, workshops, family programs and counselling, support the teams, administration, awareness and more.
4. School for Autistic Children
This school has been one of our favourite placements for over 20 years. It is a school for around 100 plus pupils who all have learning difficulties. You would work under supervision of a school. Psychologist can be supported with her work or be a classroom assistant should you study special needs education. You will do “real” work as per the needs of the school and pupils.
The goal of these projects is to find additional help for the team that is already working very hard in the communities and to support them and their work.
