Our partner is a social, creative and environmental enterprise operating from Zanzibar. Founded in 2010, we train uneducated and unemployed young men and women to create handcrafted, upcycled items from waste, i.e. glass bottles and plastics. We train this youth for employment and self-employment. Currently we have 45 men and women working who were previously unemployed and now make a sustainable income. Sustainability is not only about generating financial flows, but also about social and environmental values.
Every year thousands of tourists visit the tiny island Zanzibar, a pearl in the Indian Ocean. While we always appreciate our guests and the economic support they bring through tourism, they also cause a lot of waste. We are a successful enterprise in upcycling glass, and see the critical demand for upcycling plastics (making it something nicer then what it was). Reducing the amount of plastic waste is critical for the (marine) environment of this beautiful archipelago. Today Zanzibar is polluted by waste, lacks a national plan regarding waste management and no formal landfill. Zanzibar's economy depends on the tourism sector, but the international guests bring a lot of extra waste.
We find it important to reduce the amount of waste by re- and upcycling it, empower women and bring an income to the unprivileged by creating jobs. Our company mission addresses environment, empowerment and employability. In 2006 Zanzibar was designated for HIPC (heavily indebted poor countries) debt relief. Women do not have nearly the same rights as men have, due to tradition and culture. Unemployed women outnumber unemployed men by 33%. Zanzibar's economy depends on tourism and agriculture. We focus on the empowerment of women and youth, bring an income to the most unprivileged by creating job opportunities, create a better environment and create a sustainable environmental mind-set. It is critical to address poverty, empowerment and environmental solutions to ensure a sustainable (circular) economy in a clean Zanzibar.
Goal:
Sustainable solutions or contributions in the form of new technologies and knowledge (transfer)
We are ambitious when it comes to future developments. Our aim is to grow and expand our business. We like to become the number one place that inspires other (sustainable and fairtrade) businesses in Africa and our local community.
