This is a 24/7 care facility for children living with disabilities. A daily structured program is followed where the residents are introduced to play based and person-centred activities. The children are supported by an array of therapists (physiotherapist, occupational therapist, oral hygienist, and a dietician) on a monthly basis. The vital signs of the residents are taken regularly, and their care is based on the data collected. We are also supported by a paediatrician who attends to the health need of the residents. Our highly qualified nurse attends to the day to day health need of the children and she is supported by skilled care workers who work 12-hour shifts to render excellent care and support to our residents.
Tucked away on the beachfront of the west coast of South Africa is a home built purely on love and faith. In 2005, the father of a severely disabled daughter started building his dream of a high care facility that remains a warm and loving home to those that need 24-hour care. And so, the home for disabled was born. It is a haven for children and young people with severe disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy to Angelman syndrome. The home is a registered non-profit organization and community mental health establishment that receives little government financial assistance. Permanent care as well as relief care are provided focusing specifically on bedridden and wheelchair-bound persons. Structured activities, physiotherapy and entertainment take place daily aimed at maintaining a high level of physical emotional and mental health. Parents can rest assured that their child is never only a number allocated to a bed. No child is ever left alone to his or her own devices, individual attention is the norm in this 24/7 facility.
Loving care and dedicated attention and loads of fresh air, ensure an environment in which residents can thrive. The home is equipped to accommodate 14 residents, of which all beds are currently occupied. We have 11 dedicated caregivers, 2 cooks and 1 cleaner, working shifts to ensure 24-hour personal care. A physiotherapist, dietician, occupational therapist and medical practitioner are on standby for any support service the home might require. For us as a residential care facility this extensive care on a regular basis is crucial as the type of disabilities the children are living with are very severe. 90% of the residents cannot walk, use their hands, talk, chew and in severe cases swallow. They therefore need to be fed, carried, turned, washed and clothed and are totally dependent on assistance from others. The home is a unique experience for residents and visitors alike.
