Mauritius offers me an ideal mix of cultures: Indian cuisine, European languages, African parties,… I have often been helped by Mauritians, even when it comes to simple things such as catching a bus. The landscape is a proper paradise and this is also reflected in the gentle population. It didn't really feel like working in a developing country because the school was very well equipped and my accommodation in Flic-en-Flac also offers more than the necessary facilities. What I did notice was that the children's parents took little initiative to contact me, possibly because of a different background, and that there was also a clear wealth gap with my working and accommodation environment. The first week I did get a number of tours in the houses near a number of schools, which gave a broader perspective on daily life for people with less wealth. For example, there were fewer bus connections here, people did their laundry in the river and many spent whole days at home. It felt good to share my experience in playgrounds with children who are really grateful for it. It was fantastic to be greeted loudly every morning, to receive presents and hugs, to have the freedom to organize activities ourselves. The colleagues were also very friendly and helpful in supporting my ideas. The guidance from LGA was very professional, almost even too much guidance in my case, a little too many calls for it than necessary, but many others will look at it differently.

I did an internship for 5 months in the marketing department of a company in Mauritius. I was responsible for the development of their socials. Mauritius is a beautiful island and has a lot to offer. With the white beaches, varying activities, beautiful nature and mixed cultural background, there is something for everyone. The same mixed cultural background is, in my opinion, also the biggest motivation for the open, helpful and friendly population. Everyone is willing to help and very social. This is the main difference that I have experienced compared to the Netherlands. The accommodation was fully equipped and any missing things were undoubtedly supplied by the landlord. I think I was sufficiently prepared in all areas. It is an educational and unforgettable experience. I recommend it to everyone.
